HSR_ ANNOUNCES PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON VEHICLE ALTERNATIVES
HAMILTON, Ontario, December 27, 1990 -- The Hamilton Street Railway (HSR)
today announced it will hold a first round of public consultation meetings as part of its
Alternative Vehicle Technology (AVT) Investigation. The study will determine what
types of vehicles will make up HSR’s bus fleet over the next 20 years.
“Open consultation with the public is an important part of this study. At present,
electric trolleys, diesel buses and natural gas buses are operating in the region. We
want to know the public’s views on the merits of improved versions of each of these
technologies," says Bill O’Brien, Director of Transportation Services for HSR.
"Members of our study team will introduce the study process in detail, and will answer
questions and comments during this first set of meetings," O’Brien adds.
Environmental factors (air and noise pollution, and visual intrusion), source of energy
supply, and economic ramifications will be key considerations in evaluating each vehicle
alternative.
The meetings will be held at the Hamilton Convention Centre on January 7, 1991,
from 12:66 to 2:00 p.m. and then, later the same day, fiom 6:36 to 8:30 p.m. Experts
will discuss the vehicle technologies and representative route selections, and will
respond to questions from the public.
HSR has appointed a five-member Technical Steering Committee, which includes two
members from the Ministry of Transportation, two from HSR and a fifth, a citizen
representative. Collectively, they will oversee and evaluate the findings of the study.

The Committee has hired Cole, Sherman & Associates to conduct the study with the
help of a range of other top-notch consultants from across the province.
Based on the analyses of the study team, the Steering Committee will make
recommendations to the Regional Transit Services Committee on which types of
vehicles are suitable for Hamilton-Wentworth. This could result in the expansion or
elimination of any of the vehicles considered in the study.
The HSR study will cost approximately $410,000. Seventy-five percent of this is being
funded by the Ministry of Transportation under its Municipal Transit Assistance
Program. The results of this study will be available to other municipalities.
A second set of meetings will be convened in mid-March to communicate the results of
the study to the public. The entire study process is expected to be completed in May
